Gonzaga student, Sydney Fluker, held a candlelight vigil for the hostage situation at Congregational Beth Israel in Texas. The gunman who stormed into the synagogue did not kill anyone but did threaten and hold people there hostage in the middle of their worship. Thankfully, although it is a sad fact, the four men were able to escape the situation due to security training they were taught just in case something like this did happen. Sydney says, “An attack on one Jewish person is an attack on all of us.” Even though we are in the 21st century, antisemitism still exists today. Sydney emphasizes the importance of standing up and speaking out against these issues. Although this happened in Texas, it did not stop students at Gonzaga University from holding a service for the scary and unfortunate event. Sydney brings up an interesting point about America and its relationship with the First Amendment. They say, “If we truly are the America that claims to proudly defend the First Amendment, why does that not extend to non-Christian religion?”
